Farmers' Markets and Food Stamps

Some people think that buying from local growers at farmers’ markets are more expensive than from a grocery or chain store especially people who receive food stamps. Well, did you know that farmers’ markets accept food stamps? This is another pro of buying from local growers.

This story that I read about farmers’ markets in Ohio was referring to the fact that a very low amount of residents that receive food assistance (food stamps) actually use them at farmers’ markets. So, the Gund Foundation sponsored a program to encourage people to use their food benefits to buy from local farmers.

The George Gund Foundation was created in 1952 because Mr. Gund believed the private foundation concept provided the most positive, farsighted vehicle for intelligent underwriting of creative solutions to social ills in a manner which would not be limited to his own lifetime. The users of the food stamp debit card (Ohio Direction Card) will receive extra money if they spend five dollars or more at farmers’ markets.

Ok, so I know this is in Ohio but trends spread quickly. Farmers’ markets may not have the Gund Foundation establishing programs but they still accept food stamps and give every resident in their area a chance to get healthier food.
